Turkish first lady meets Brazilian and Sierra Leonean counterparts in New York

Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan met with the wives of the presidents of Brazil and Sierra Leone in New York on Monday, discussing environmental challenges, climate action and social welfare.

The meeting with Rosangela “Janja” da Silva, the wife of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was held behind closed doors at the Turkevi, or Turkish House, according to a statement shared by Erdogan on social media.

“We discussed issues on our shared agenda, particularly environmental challenges and efforts to combat the climate crisis, as well as preparations for the COP31 process,” Erdogan said.

Discussions on COP31 and zero waste

Turkish Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, Zero Waste Foundation Chairman Samed Agirbas, and COP30 President and Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago also attended the meeting.

Erdogan serves as chairwoman of the UN High-Level Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste.

Meeting with Sierra Leone’s first lady

In a separate meeting at the Turkevi, Erdogan held talks with Fatima Maada Bio, the wife of Sierra Leone’s president and chairwoman of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development.

The two discussed issues of common concern, including the environment, education, and the welfare of women and children, Erdogan said.
