US President Donald Trump said Friday that access to the White House could be restricted for additional news organizations, hours after announcing the immediate removal of CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
Trump accused the three media organizations in a post on the “Truth Social” platform of repeatedly publishing false information about his administration. He later defended the decision while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office and said the list could be expanded.
“There are a lot of news organizations, and there could be others among them,” Trump said.
The president did not specify which media organizations could be targeted next. However, he also criticized The New York Times and The Washington Post during his conversation with reporters.
It remains unclear how the ban will be implemented. Trump said he did not want the targeted media organizations in his office or at the White House and that the restrictions would be applied “to the greatest extent possible.” Nevertheless, reporters from the organizations continued working at the White House complex on Friday afternoon.
CNN said it stood by its White House reporters and the material they produce. The company said enforcing the ban could violate press freedom protected by the US Constitution. Politico also said it would defend its rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.
The decision marks the latest confrontation between the Trump administration and news organizations over access to the White House. During Trump’s first presidency, CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s press credentials were revoked in 2018 after a heated exchange with the president. CNN challenged the decision in court, and Acosta’s access was restored.
During Trump’s current presidency, the administration has also restricted the Associated Press’s access to some presidential events. The related legal dispute remains ongoing. Press freedom organizations have voiced constitutional concerns over the latest decision, saying the government cannot deny journalists access to the White House because of their reporting.
