US President Donald Trump said American authorities collaborated closely with British security services in the investigation that led to the arrest of five men near the RAF Fairford air base in western England, according to the source report.
“They were looking to do big damage to our ports,” Trump told reporters after arriving in Illinois for a golf tournament. He described the arrests as “fantastic” and said US authorities had monitored the suspects for an extended period.
Arrests made under Explosives Act
British authorities declared a major incident on Sunday in a village near the military facility and evacuated 85 households. Police detained the five suspects under the Explosives Act.
UK Counter Terrorism Policing said the men had been arrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism.
Security tightened around RAF Fairford
RAF Fairford hosts US Air Force operations and has supported missions against Iran since February, amid the broader conflict in the Middle East.
The arrests came after security measures around the base were strengthened. In July, Britain said its armed forces were prepared to defend against possible retaliation after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned about US bombers operating from Fairford.
