US President Donald Trump said Monday that Canada wants a trade agreement with the United States, but accused Ottawa of treating Washington “very unfairly.”
“They want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked whether a trade agreement with Canada remained possible.
Trump said Canada had been among the most difficult countries for the United States to deal with. “They’ve treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world,” he said.
Trump criticises Canada’s tariffs
Comparing Canada with China, Trump said Washington was able to reach agreements with Beijing, while negotiations with Ottawa had proved particularly challenging.
“We get along with China, we get along with the people, and we make good deals. But Canada has been really very difficult to deal with,” he said.
Trump also accused Canada of imposing tariffs of 400% “and more” on American farmers, saying Ottawa was taking advantage of the United States.
“They take advantage of us. They feel entitled,” he said.
US and Canada impose retaliatory tariffs
Trump imposed a 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade talks broke down in August. Canada responded with matching tariffs on Sept. 8.
The United States later announced an outright ban on some Canadian imports, including motorcycles and whiskey. The measures are due to take effect on Sept. 29.
