US President Donald Trump said Sunday that he expects his envoys to hold further negotiations with Iran this week, but said Tehran had not yet presented terms acceptable to Washington.
“I expect more talks with Iran this week,” Trump told US news website Axios, according to the report. “They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make. It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago. They overplayed their hand.”
Asked whether the United States was considering renewed military strikes against Iran, Trump said the option remained on the table.
Indirect talks held in New York
The comments followed indirect diplomatic contacts last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner through Qatari mediators.
According to the report, Tehran offered to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear negotiations within a week if Washington lifted its naval blockade, removed sanctions on oil sales and restored a regional ceasefire.
Trump rejects Iranian proposal
Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday, as the two countries remain engaged in a seven-month war that began with large-scale US and Israeli strikes in late February.
