US President Donald Trump has denied reports that Tehran was offered sanctions relief and access to frozen funds in exchange for concessions related to Iran’s nuclear program.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump said the reports were “not true” and that he had offered Tehran “nothing.”
What did the reports say?
Axios and CNN, citing US officials, reported that Washington was prepared to ease sanctions if Iran made concrete progress on its nuclear program.
The reports emerged as US and Iranian officials held separate talks on Monday with the participation of intermediaries. The sides discussed ways to end a conflict that has continued for seven months.
Iran’s position on its nuclear program
Trump has said that one of the goals of the war was to weaken Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran, meanwhile, says it has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons and that its program serves peaceful purposes.
Tehran also maintains that, under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it has the right to develop peaceful nuclear technologies.
According to Reuters, thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced as a result of US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
