U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the start of large-scale exploration for oil, gas and minerals in Greenland.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that foreign media have carried the announcement.
“Some experts believe that Greenland has more easily recoverable oil reserves than almost anywhere else in the world. More importantly, Greenland is indispensable to the security of the United States and Europe, both defensively and offensively,” the U.S. president wrote.
Trump did not provide details about the planned exploration in Greenland. He said, however, that any future attack on the United States would have to pass through Greenland. According to Trump, defense systems there would routinely destroy drones, missiles and other types of weapons that may be developed in the future.
In September, the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement aimed at easing tensions that followed Trump’s repeated threats to take control of the strategically important island, which has abundant mineral resources.
The agreement expands the role of U.S. armed forces in Greenland, which is part of Denmark. It provides a basis for establishing two new military bases and deploying the American “Golden Dome” missile defense system. At the same time, the agreement reaffirms Denmark’s sovereignty and the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.
