Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Wednesday evening. US President Donald Trump personally welcomed him at the airport. It was seen as the first time in 60 years that a sitting US president had personally received a foreign leader visiting the country.
The visit was Xi’s first state visit to the United States in more than a decade. It was the third meeting between the two leaders in less than a year. They met in Busan last October and later held talks during Trump’s visit to Beijing in May.
Trade truce is the main outcome
An official welcoming ceremony was held on Sept. 24 on the South Lawn of the White House. The leaders then held bilateral talks lasting slightly more than an hour. The meeting was closed to the press.
The most concrete result was announced before the main meeting. The United States and China agreed to extend their existing trade truce, which was due to expire in November, until Jan. 10. The move will give the two sides additional time to work on a longer-term agreement.
However, no new trade deal was announced. No major agreement was reached on artificial intelligence, and no substantive publicly announced outcome emerged regarding the war in Iran.
Positions on Taiwan remain unchanged
Taiwan was also included on the talks’ agenda. China’s ambassador to the United States had described Taiwan as one of Beijing’s “red lines” ahead of Xi’s visit. The two sides reiterated their previous positions during the meeting but failed to reach an agreement resolving their differences.
No joint news conference or final statement was held after the meeting. Instead, the US and Chinese governments issued separate statements on the talks, tailored to their respective audiences.
Diplomatic atmosphere was a key focus of the summit
The main outcome of the meeting was the continuation of leader-level dialogue and the preservation of stability in bilateral relations. Despite intense competition between the two countries, Trump and Xi displayed a personal relationship.
The two presidents and their spouses had tea at the White House on Friday morning and later visited the National Archives as part of the concluding events of the visit. The program was intended to project warmth and stability in US-China relations.
Experts said the summit was symbolically significant but produced limited concrete results. The artificial intelligence issue also highlighted the differences between the two sides. Trump had previously said that the country with an advantage in artificial intelligence would hold a dominant position in the future. Nevertheless, neither the United States nor China appeared ready to impose significant restrictions on its own technological development.
The extension of the trade truce has created additional time for continued negotiations and the stabilization of relations. Although complex issues between the two sides remain unresolved, preventing a new crisis is considered one of the summit’s main outcomes.
