Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on the “successful” conduct of Russia’s State Duma elections during a phone call on Monday, the Kremlin said.
Tokayev said the results “convincingly demonstrate broad support for the Russian president’s strategic course aimed at safeguarding the long-term interests of the Russian state.”
Russia’s parliamentary election
The three-day election for the 450-seat State Duma, the lower house of parliament, ended on Sunday, with voter turnout approaching 59.32%, according to the Central Election Commission.
Preliminary results showed the ruling United Russia party in the lead and on course to secure a constitutional majority. Commission chief Ella Pamfilova said the party had won 57.83% of the vote and was likely to take 355 seats.
It was Russia’s first parliamentary election since 2022 and was held amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Voting also took place in areas of Ukraine controlled by Russia, a move rejected by Kyiv and condemned by some Western governments.
Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation
Putin and Tokayev also discussed bilateral issues and cooperation in the Eurasian region ahead of a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States Council of Heads of State scheduled for early October in Turkmenistan.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further developing the comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance between Russia and Kazakhstan.
Putin had earlier said that participation in the vote would demonstrate unity and contribute to Russia’s “victory” amid the war in Ukraine.
