Three people were killed and 36 injured in attacks on two airports in Saudi Arabia, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said on Wednesday.
Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were targeted in separate attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Emergency services and relevant authorities responded to both incidents, according to GACA.
The attack on Abha airport killed two residents, one Moroccan and one Algerian, and injured 28 people. The injured included two Saudi citizens and residents of Bangladeshi and Filipino nationalities. Their injuries ranged from minor to serious, GACA said.
At King Khalid International Airport, a Sudanese national was killed and eight people were injured. Those hurt included five Saudi citizens, two Egyptians and one Pakistani national.
All injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment. The attacks also caused material damage, GACA said.
The authority said it was coordinating with security agencies to assess the damage and take necessary steps to protect passengers and airport employees.
Yemen’s Houthis claimed on Wednesday that they had carried out the attacks. The group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said it targeted King Khalid International Airport with drones and launched another operation against Abha International Airport using ballistic missiles and drones.
The attacks came amid an escalation between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Saudi Arabia has led the coalition since March 2015.
