Chinese technology company “Tencent” has signed a reported $7 billion, five-year lease with US cloud provider “Oracle”, gaining access to about 100,000 advanced AI chips that are unavailable in China, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

The agreement, reached this year, covers several “Oracle” data centres in south-east Asia. About 30% of the total is payable upfront, according to the report. Neither company has publicly confirmed the deal.

Why Tencent is seeking computing capacity overseas

The reported agreement comes as Chinese technology companies face limited domestic chip supplies and tighter US export controls, prompting them to seek additional computing capacity abroad.

“Tencent” has increased infrastructure spending over the past year as it works to introduce AI agents across its services, particularly its “WeChat” superapp, which has more than 1.4 billion users.

Other Chinese companies are major data-centre clients

While “Tencent” is pursuing multibillion-dollar leasing arrangements, “ByteDance” and “Alibaba” remain the largest clients of data centres in south-east Asia, the Financial Times reported.
