Syrian authorities have dismantled a three-member cell linked to the Lebanese group Hezbollah in the southern province of Daraa, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.
According to the ministry, the General Intelligence Directorate, working with internal security forces, arrested the suspects in the Yarmouk Basin in western Daraa.
Authorities say rocket launchers were dismantled
The operation followed surveillance of what officials described as an attempt by the cell to set up rocket launchers for attacks intended to destabilise security, the ministry said.
Authorities said the launchers had been fully dismantled. Investigations into the suspects were continuing before they were referred to judicial authorities.
The ministry did not identify the intended targets or say how many rocket launchers had been found. Hezbollah had not immediately commented on the claims as of 2000 GMT.
Location near Israel disengagement line
The Yarmouk Basin is located in western Daraa near the disengagement line with Israel.
On July 16, Syrian authorities said they had foiled an attempt to smuggle a shipment of advanced weapons across the Syrian-Iraqi border.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the shipment was intended to pass through Syrian territory en route to Lebanon for Hezbollah, according to the authorities.
