A suspicious package prompted temporary road closures in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday as world leaders gathered nearby for the high-level United Nations General Assembly General Debate, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
“The package has been cleared and deemed to not be suspicious,” the NYPD said after an emergency response in the area.
Police initially sealed off several blocks from 42nd Street to 44th Street between Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue, telling motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.
Police response near UN headquarters
Specialized units determined that the unattended item posed no danger. However, authorities said 43rd Street between Third Avenue and Lexington Avenue remained closed.
The incident occurred just blocks from the UN headquarters, where heads of state and government gathered for the opening day of the 81st General Debate. Security measures had been tightened across New York during the event.
