On August 29, at approximately 17:00, the "Sheki" border detachment of the State Border Service (SBS) received an urgent distress call regarding a citizen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in need of assistance in the mountainous area near the village of Bash Zayzid in the Sheki district.
This information was provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM by the State Border Service.
It was determined that the Dutch citizen, who arrived in the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 26 via the Frankfurt-Baku flight for tourism purposes, had embarked on a hiking trip in the mountainous terrain of the Sheki district on the morning of August 29. While trekking toward the Chelengi highland area, the tourist was attacked by dogs, sustaining multiple bodily injuries.
To facilitate the evacuation of the severely injured individual, the State Border Service immediately dispatched a medical team and a rescue unit via a helicopter from the Special Air Operations Command. Despite the challenging mountainous terrain, darkness, and an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level, the rescue operation was successfully executed. The SBS medical team provided initial emergency aid to the victim, who suffered multiple open wounds to the head and body, before airlifting the individual to the Sheki Central District Hospital for urgent surgery.
The Sheki region, located in the northern part of Azerbaijan, is a popular destination for international tourists due to its rich cultural heritage and scenic Caucasus mountain landscapes. The State Border Service frequently conducts search and rescue operations in these remote areas, ensuring the safety of both citizens and visitors navigating the country's challenging high-altitude terrain.
