Spain’s Central Electoral Board has opened disciplinary proceedings against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez over remarks made at a housing news conference ahead of the November 29 election, according to El Constitucional.

The board partially upheld complaints filed by the opposition Popular Party (PP) and Se Acabo La Fiesta concerning Sánchez’s October 6 news conference at the Moncloa Palace.

It said references to government achievements, criticism of opposition parties and a call for a broader parliamentary majority went beyond an objective explanation of government decisions.

The board ordered the disputed statements removed from official government channels. The proceedings could lead to a fine of between €300 and €3,000 ($350 and $3,500).

Sánchez said the news conference complied with electoral law and was intended to inform the public about government decisions.
