SpaceX has donated 50 “Starlink” satellite internet kits to Malaysia to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday.

The donation by the US aerospace company was announced during a meeting between Anwar and a SpaceX delegation in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital.

In a post on “X”, the social media platform owned by “X Corp.”, Anwar said the talks focused on expanding cooperation through “Starlink”, SpaceX’s satellite internet service. The discussions also covered improving connectivity for people living in remote areas.

Connectivity for remote communities

Anwar said “Starlink” was supporting government efforts under the JENDELA digital infrastructure initiative, which aims to expand coverage and improve internet quality.

The initiative includes remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as settlements of Orang Asli communities in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Malaysian prime minister also welcomed the operation of “Starlink’s” Point of Presence infrastructure in Cyberjaya. He said the facility would help manage local data traffic and improve service quality for users.

“Technological progress must bring tangible benefits to the people,” Anwar said.

Focus on cybersecurity

Anwar added that cybersecurity, data protection and safe internet use must remain priorities alongside the expansion of connectivity.

The government aims to ensure that remote communities have access to high-quality and secure internet services so they are not excluded from development, he said.

Malaysia has increasingly turned to satellite connectivity to extend internet services to areas where conventional telecommunications infrastructure remains limited.
