Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has shared his thoughts on the end of Lionel Messi’s career with Argentina’s national team. He said his compatriot was unmatched statistically and had grown considerably over the years, both as an athlete and as a person.
“His development surpassed every possible obstacle. He has always treated others with respect and maintained his dignity. It is difficult to sustain that for 20 to 25 years — I do not even know how long he has been playing,” Simeone told Mundo Deportivo.
Simeone said he was grateful to Messi for representing Argentina and stressed that he had brought great joy to the country. According to the coach, Messi taught Argentinians to keep fighting and stay the course even when things were not going well. Simeone said these qualities were Messi’s greatest value to Argentinians.
The 39-year-old Argentine played his final match for the national team on October 7, in a friendly against Benin. Messi scored once and provided two assists in the match.
