Sevilla head coach Luis Garcia Plaza criticized the refereeing after his side lost 4-1 to Real Madrid in the ninth round of the Spanish league.
Plaza said Real Madrid deserved to win while both teams had the same number of players on the pitch. However, he argued that the referee denied Sevilla a numerical advantage from the 25th minute and should have called a foul before Real Madrid’s second goal.
“Perhaps we still would not have won, but at 0-0 we should have been playing with an extra man. I do not understand why VAR did not call the referee over to review that incident. Perhaps, after our win, Real Madrid would have been nine points behind Barcelona before El Clásico,” Footmercato quoted Plaza as saying. He also said Spain’s three biggest clubs were the ones who complained the most.
Arda Guler scored in the 30th minute, Kylian Mbappe netted in the 37th and 63rd minutes, and Diomande scored in the 82nd. Bueno scored Sevilla’s only goal in the 80th minute.
After nine rounds, Sevilla were sixth in the standings with 14 points, while Real Madrid were third with 21.
