A severe accident occurred during the construction of a tunnel at a hydroelectric power plant located in the Chamoli district of India's Uttarakhand state.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, a sudden influx of water and debris into the tunnel late yesterday evening left more than 20 workers trapped inside.

Dr. Ayush, a representative of the regional medical services, reported that search and rescue operations conducted throughout the morning resulted in the recovery of seven bodies. Ten other individuals injured during the incident were transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami addressed the tragedy on his official account on the X social media platform. He stated that relevant agencies are working tirelessly at the site to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining workers trapped in the tunnel.

Large-scale search and rescue operations are currently ongoing at the scene. The Uttarakhand region, situated in the Himalayas, is frequently prone to geological instability, making large-scale infrastructure projects like tunnel construction particularly challenging and high-risk.
