The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s government said on Tuesday it had carried out a “special military operation” targeting resources it said were sustaining the Houthi group’s war effort.
In a statement, the coalition said its joint forces command had determined that the Houthis were using civilian facilities and vital resources to support military activities.
The coalition identified the sites as the central al-Sabaha facility in Sanaa, underground fuel reserves, fuel tanks and berths used to transport and unload fuel in Al Hudaydah, Sanaa and Dhamar.
It accused the Houthis of using the resources to support military operations while depriving Yemenis of supplies needed to meet their needs. The coalition also said the facilities were used to supply the group’s missile and drone arsenal, which it described as a threat to Saudi Arabia, airports, ports and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The statement said that support had contributed to attacks on civilians and civilian facilities, and to preparations for imminent attacks on civilian sites in Saudi Arabia and commercial ships in international waterways.
The operation was aimed at “neutralizing the Houthi militia’s capabilities” to threaten Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the southern Red Sea and maritime routes, the coalition said.
It said its forces had complied with international humanitarian law and taken feasible precautions during planning and execution to avoid civilian casualties or damage.
The coalition called on the Houthis to “immediately” stop attacks targeting civilians and civilian facilities, including airports, ports, oil facilities and infrastructure. The Houthi group did not comment.
