The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said on Thursday it intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis towards Saudi Arabia.
Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said on “X” that two missiles had been launched towards Riyadh and another towards Khamis Mushait, in the southwestern Asir region.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree warned experts, engineers and other workers at Saudi oil facilities against staying at sites the group considers “targets”. He said the warning covered facilities previously targeted as well as other oil sites that could be targeted in future operations.
Saree also renewed the Houthis’ warning to airlines, airport workers and passengers concerning airspace and airports the group had previously designated as subject to its military operations.
Earlier on Thursday, Saree claimed the Houthis had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, disrupting air traffic. He renewed a warning to international airlines operating in Saudi airspace, excluding the airspace over Mecca and Medina.
The latest exchanges come amid an escalation in Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports, military sites and oil infrastructure.
Yemeni government forces launched a new offensive this week, called “Dawn of Yemen”, with the stated aim of restoring state institutions and retaking territory held by the Houthis.
Yemen has been in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government. Fighting resumed in July after relative calm following a 2022 truce.
