Japanese judoka Sanshiro Murao won gold in the 90kg category at the world championships in Baku. He defeated compatriot Goki Tajima in the final to become world champion for the second consecutive time.
Murao said this was his third visit to Azerbaijan and that he had received a warm welcome on each trip. He praised the atmosphere at the National Gymnastics Arena and spectators’ enthusiasm for the sport.
“I think Azerbaijan is a very beautiful and hospitable country. I thank your people,” Murao said.
The Japanese athlete recalled that he had also won the world title last year and said he was happy to have achieved his goal. He said he was seeking to prove his superiority through consecutive victories.
Azerbaijan’s Murat Fatyev, who competed in the same weight category, won bronze.
