NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Russia was testing the alliance across Europe with airspace violations, arson, sabotage and other hostile actions, but was failing to intimidate its members.
Speaking Thursday at a joint press conference in Münster, Germany, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Rutte said NATO saw no imminent military attack against the alliance.
Rutte urges allies to remain vigilant
However, he warned that Russia’s campaign of hostile actions against NATO allies could continue and called on members to remain alert.
Rutte accused the Kremlin of trying to divide the alliance and pressure its members into reducing support for Ukraine. “Our message is clear: keep calm, carry on, and continue the support for Ukraine,” he said.
He said NATO had the capabilities to defend every inch of allied territory and was prepared to respond to threats.
Rutte says Putin is paying a heavy price
On the war in Ukraine, Rutte said Russian President Vladimir Putin was paying a “huge price” for the conflict, claiming that tens of thousands of young Russians were being sent to their deaths each month.
“He is failing on the battlefield, and he is failing to intimidate us,” Rutte said.
