Russian women’s judo head coach Vladimir Degtyaryov has praised fans’ interest in the world championships being held in Baku. He said the tournament had been organized in line with International Judo Federation standards.
In an interview with Match TV, Degtyaryov said he was particularly pleased to see large numbers of fans attending the competitions and actively supporting the athletes. The stands in Baku were not artificially filled, he said, adding that spectators had a genuine interest in judo.
The Russian coach also noted that it was difficult to find an empty seat in the stands during one of the final sessions. He said there was not even room to sit on the stairs, and praised the local population’s attitude toward judo.
The judo world championships are taking place in Baku from October 4 to 11. Azerbaijan’s team has won two medals: Ahmad Yusifov became world champion in the 50-kilogram category, while Rashid Mammadaliyev won bronze in the 73-kilogram category. Azerbaijan ranks second in the medal standings, behind Japan, which has won five gold medals.
