George Russell held off a late challenge from Max Verstappen to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on Sunday, claiming his third victory of the season in a race that saw six drivers retire, including McLaren’s Lando Norris.
The Mercedes driver made a strong start and controlled the early stages. Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, faced pressure from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar during the race in Azerbaijan’s capital, according to the source report.
Safety car interruptions disrupt race
The race was interrupted after Williams driver Alex Albon made an error, prompting the deployment of the safety car. A second stoppage followed when Alpine’s Franco Colapinto locked up and collided with teammate Pierre Gasly and Norris.
Following the restart, Verstappen applied intense pressure to Russell in the closing laps. Russell nevertheless held on to win by just one-tenth of a second, denying the Dutch driver his first victory of the season.
Hadjar completes Red Bull double podium
Hadjar finished third to give Red Bull a double podium, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli completed the top five.
Antonelli produced one of the biggest gains of the race, rising from 16th on the starting grid to fifth amid the numerous incidents.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, followed by Arvid Lindblad and Esteban Ocon. Ollie Bearman and Carlos Sainz completed the top 10, securing Haas’ first double-points finish since the Monaco Grand Prix.
