US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has criticized the current international system as ineffective, saying Washington will consistently place its national interests above the international order.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Rubio said multilateral institutions had moved beyond their original mandates and failed to resolve major conflicts, according to the source.

“The international system is not in good shape right now, and these international norms people talk about,” Rubio said.
He added that the administration of President Donald Trump believes the primary responsibility of every government is to protect the national interests of its own country.
Rubio said a number of world leaders now share the view that global institutions are no longer operating as intended.
“Multiple leaders pointed to the fact that the international system is failing, and it’s failing because it has grown beyond its mandate,” he said.
US foreign policy to focus on national interest
According to Rubio, the system has become involved in issues beyond its purpose while remaining unable to resolve major conflicts around the world.
He cited tensions and conflicts involving Thailand and Cambodia, India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, as well as maritime friction involving Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio said that, in the absence of an effective international system, individual states must protect their own security.
“At the end of the day, the United States will always act. At least as long as President Trump is in office, we will always act in the national interest of our country, not in the interest of the international order,” he said.
“We will never put the international order above the interest of the United States,” Rubio added.
