Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland footballer Roy Keane has commented on Manchester City being found liable for breaches of the English Premier League’s financial rules.
Keane said that if he had played for Manchester City, he would throw the medals he had won in the bin: “They knew this would seriously hurt a lot of people, but they went ahead and did it anyway. If I were a footballer, I would throw the medals in the bin 100%. How could it be any other way? This is fraud.”
Daily Mail reported Keane’s comments.
Roy Keane added that financial violations had taken place behind the scenes while Manchester City were winning matches on the pitch.
Manchester City were found liable last week for almost all of the charges brought against the club over breaches of the English Premier League’s financial rules. Only one charge was not upheld.
In February 2023, the Premier League accused the club of breaching financial rules 115 times between 2009 and 2018. The Times later reported that the number of alleged breaches was 130, saying this resulted from confusion over some of the rules when the charges were announced.
The Premier League’s financial regulations are intended to promote transparency and ensure that clubs compete within sustainable financial limits. The case has attracted significant attention because of its potential implications for Manchester City’s titles, records and future participation in English football competitions.
