Romania’s prime minister-designate Siegfried Muresan lost a confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday, broadcaster Digi24 reported.
Muresan’s proposed government received 182 votes in favour and 15 against, falling short of the 233 votes required for approval.
The result fulfilled the constitutional conditions for parliament to be dissolved and early elections to be called, giving President Nicusor Dan the authority to take that step. Dan has nevertheless repeatedly said he does not want to dissolve parliament.
Government formation efforts
Dan formally designated Muresan as prime minister-designate in a decree signed on Sept. 17. Muresan then had 10 days to submit his governing programme and proposed Cabinet to parliament for a confidence vote.
He was backed by the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR) and the ethnic Hungarian Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), the parties with which he held consultations.
Muresan said he would not negotiate with the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), arguing that the party was not committed to European values. AUR and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) had both said they would not support his government’s inauguration.
Muresan had pledged to establish a competent, stable and unequivocally pro-European government focused on reducing inflation, supporting economic growth and improving living standards.
