Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia would stop attacks on voting day if Kyiv genuinely intends to hold an election. Ukraine has said it is ready to vote if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to halt strikes on Ukraine on election day if Kyiv “genuinely wants to hold an election,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

His remarks came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to hold a vote if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.

Speaking at a briefing, Peskov said Moscow believed Kyiv was seeking the proposed truce not to organise an election but to regroup and continue the war. He said it was “perfectly obvious” that Kyiv did not want to hold elections.

Peskov said Russia wanted long-term peace in Ukraine rather than a temporary ceasefire and was prepared to do what was necessary to achieve it.

Asked about an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine announced by US President Donald Trump on Sunday, Peskov said contacts were continuing. He added that the Kremlin would provide information when it had something to report.

Peskov also accused European countries of obstructing efforts to reach a peace settlement, saying US efforts were more appealing. He described Europe as a “party of war” rather than a “party of peace”.
