Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said US President Donald Trump’s call for new leadership in Ukraine reflected what he described as Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s lack of political will to end the war, according to “RIA Novosti”.
In an interview with the Russian state news agency, Peskov said Zelenskyy needed to take responsibility and make difficult decisions to resolve the conflict.
Trump had said on Saturday that Ukraine should “get a new president”, accusing Zelenskyy of missing several opportunities to end the war. Peskov said the Ukrainian president must either assume responsibility and demonstrate political will or fail to do so.
Trump also criticised Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, warning that attacks on refineries could worsen global fuel shortages and affect American farmers and ranchers.
On Sunday, Zelenskyy said he was ready to hold presidential elections if Russia agreed to a complete 60-day ceasefire. He also said Kyiv was prepared to take steps towards de-escalation, including a mutual halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.
Trump said the same day that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire covering attacks on energy infrastructure, but provided no details.
Zelenskyy later wrote on “X” that Trump’s announcement was “good news”, while saying Russian attacks were continuing, including against a power plant in Kharkiv.
