The trial investigation into the criminal case against Saleh Samadov, the arrested former chairman of the Imishli District Council of Elders, has been completed.
According to Qafqazinfo, the prosecutor made a closing statement at today’s hearing at the Baku Court of Serious Crimes.
The prosecutor requested that Samadov be found guilty of the charges brought against him and sentenced to nine years in prison.
The defense lawyer was given time to make a closing statement.
Samadov drew public criticism last year after appearing at an event marking May 9, Victory Day over Fascism. At the time, the district elder appeared under the Soviet flag wearing a “St. George ribbon,” regarded as a symbol of Russian imperialism.
Following the controversy, Samadov was dismissed from his position. Some time later, the State Security Service uncovered alleged corruption offenses involving him. He is accused of embezzling 200,000 manats. The former council chairman has been in detention for one year.
In Azerbaijan, a prosecutor’s request represents the position of the state prosecution and does not constitute a final verdict. The court is expected to issue its ruling after hearing the defense’s arguments and completing the remaining procedural steps.
