Azerbaijan’s aluminum production should be increased to 100,000 tons.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that President Ilham Aliyev made the remarks at a meeting dedicated to the “State Program on the development of the mining (metal ores) and metallurgical industries in 2027-2030,” which he chaired.
“When we speak about the development of the metallurgical industry, this of course means the development of aluminum production. Although there were proposals from certain foreign partners, they were not implemented. This is because we are making every effort to apply mechanisms that can provide maximum benefit to the country’s economy. Therefore, I believe that we should develop this important industrial sector ourselves, and aluminum production should be increased to 100,000 tons under the program to be adopted. As I said, the deadline here is the end of 2030. Several plants will also be established, and we will now be informed about this,” he said.
The head of state also addressed another issue: “The financial provision of this program is clear; it has been coordinated with all relevant institutions, and we will implement the program under any circumstances. At the same time, if local and foreign investors show interest, their participation at a certain percentage is also possible. It would be good if they participate, and it would also be fine if they do not. We will implement it anyway. However, I believe that although this sector is capital-intensive, it is profitable. In particular, the prices of precious metals on global markets are currently quite high, and they will probably remain at more or less this level. Therefore, it is both capital-intensive and profitable. Our message to local and foreign investors is that the doors are open. The program will be published, and all the work to be carried out will be listed there. Everyone can familiarize themselves with it. If it generates interest, we can also attract foreign investors. What will this ultimately provide for us? As I noted, a new and strong industrial sector will be created. More than 5,000, perhaps even more, new jobs will be created. The development of liberated Garabagh and Eastern Zangazur, as well as the expansion of employment there, will accelerate. Significant revenues will flow into the state budget in the form of taxes, and strong export potential will be created. It may be somewhat early to say this now, but the expected annual positive financial impact should exceed 1 billion manats. I do not want to give a final figure. However, these are projects that can be measured in billions of manats.”
The planned program is intended to expand Azerbaijan’s metallurgical capacity through new industrial facilities and support economic activity in liberated territories. Beyond aluminum production, the initiative is expected to strengthen employment, tax revenues and export opportunities by the end of 2030.
