President Aliyev receives global investment executives in Baku

Meetings with leaders of Global Infrastructure Partners and Brookfield Asset Management focus on expanding investment cooperation with Azerbaijan

On Sept. 25, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Adebayo Ogunlesi, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a global infrastructure investment company operating as part of BlackRock, one of the world’s leading asset management firms.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the meeting recalled President Ilham Aliyev’s meeting with Adebayo Ogunlesi in Davos in January this year.

The importance of a memorandum of understanding on long-term cooperation signed in Davos between the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ), BlackRock and Global Infrastructure Partners was discussed.

The meeting expressed satisfaction with the development of investment cooperation between Azerbaijan and the company. The sides exchanged views on the results achieved and prospects for expanding the partnership.

It was noted that the partnership established between SOFAZ and Global Infrastructure Partners already covers specific international investment projects. In this regard, it was highlighted that the Fund had jointly invested with the company in Italy’s high-speed rail operator Italo and London’s Gatwick Airport.

The sides exchanged views on investment opportunities in Azerbaijan’s infrastructure sector, including potential cooperation in digital and transport infrastructure.

The meeting also addressed the significance of the Second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum held in Baku under the auspices of President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the Azerbaijan Infrastructure Investment Dialogue organized jointly by SOFAZ and BlackRock as part of the forum. It was emphasized that companies managing assets worth $30 trillion participated in these events.

Global Infrastructure Partners has operated as part of BlackRock, the world’s largest investment management company, since 2024. BlackRock, which manages $15.3 trillion in assets, is a global investment company specializing in energy, transport, digital infrastructure, water and waste management. Global Infrastructure Partners manages $170 billion in assets. The company is also one of the key founders of the Global Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Fund, alongside BlackRock, Microsoft and MGX.

On Sept. 25, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev also received Connor Teskey, chief executive officer of Brookfield Asset Management, one of the world’s leading investment companies.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the meeting recalled with satisfaction President Ilham Aliyev’s meeting with Connor Teskey in Davos in January this year. The importance of a memorandum of understanding on long-term strategic cooperation signed between SOFAZ and Brookfield Asset Management was noted.

The meeting discussed expanding investment cooperation between Azerbaijan and the company, particularly potential projects in the fields of the energy transition, renewable energy, energy storage systems and digital infrastructure. The importance of Azerbaijan’s energy potential in strengthening the country’s position as a regional energy hub was also highlighted.

Brookfield, which manages more than $1 trillion in assets, is one of the world’s major owners and operators of real assets in energy, telecommunications, digital infrastructure, transport and other sectors. The company’s infrastructure platform includes more than 308,000 telecommunications sites, 77,000 kilometers of fiber-optic networks, 150 data centers, 36,300 kilometers of railway networks and 3,200 kilometers of toll roads. Its utilities infrastructure businesses serve more than 10 million consumers worldwide.
