Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença has commented on the disagreement between national team head coach Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo, describing it as an ordinary misunderstanding between a coach and a player.
“Ronaldo is the face of Portugal”
Proença said relations between the head coach and players fall outside his remit. However, the federation president said Ronaldo should be treated with respect and stressed that the forward is called up to the national team solely on sporting merit. He added that Ronaldo would remain in the squad as long as his physical condition allowed.
In Proença’s view, the misunderstanding should be resolved within the team. He said the players’ remarks to the media showed the bond between Ronaldo and the squad. The captain, he said, is part of Portugal’s national team and the country’s face on the international stage.
Proença added that there would be an opportunity to discuss the matter in a calm setting after the upcoming matches. In his view, the federation, the head coach and the players should all be involved in resolving the issue. Record reported his comments.
Ronaldo leaves national team camp
Ronaldo left the national team camp before Portugal’s third-round Nations League match against Denmark. Portugal won the match 4-2. Jesus had earlier said there was no conflict between him and the player.
Portuguese media have reported that Ronaldo and Jesus may hold a reconciliation meeting and that the forward is expected to be included in the squad for the November matches.
