A statement issued by the office of Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan indicates that issues related to the delimitation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border, including enclaves and exclaves, will be discussed within the framework of the relevant commissions.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing Grigoryan’s office, that work on separate sections of the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border, including issues concerning enclaves and exclaves, will be carried out in accordance with the regulations governing the joint activities of the commission on the delimitation of the state border and border security issues between the two countries, as well as the State Commission on the Delimitation of the State Border between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The statement suggests that the issues will be resolved within the existing commissions rather than announcing specific steps in the delimitation process in advance.
Which direction will the delimitation take?
There is currently no official and fully confirmed information on which section of the border the process will begin with. Reports known to the media indicate that the delimitation may proceed from north to south.
At the same time, various reports concerning different directions have emerged in recent days. One of them concerns the possible conduct of the delimitation process in the Zangazur direction. These reports have not yet been officially confirmed.
Another issue under discussion is the status of three villages in Gazakh that were previously under Armenian control and Karki village in Nakhchivan.
No official statement on Karki
Although various media reports have suggested that Karki village will be returned to Azerbaijan, no officially confirmed decision has been announced so far.
The final outcome is expected to be made public after discussions by the delimitation and border commissions.
A similar approach was observed during the previous delimitation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The outcome concerning the return of four Gazakh villages to Azerbaijan was announced after a final result had been reached.
It has also been reported that issues concerning other sections of the border, including enclaves and exclaves, are currently being discussed within the commissions.
The issue has also drawn the attention of Russian media. Reports concerning Karki should be viewed as media reports for now, as they have not received official confirmation.
Final decisions on the specific direction of the delimitation process and enclave-exclave issues will become known after agreements are reached by the relevant commissions of the two sides.
