Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said his country would maintain relations with Russia and deepen those ties.
Pashinyan said Armenia was pursuing a policy of diversifying its foreign relations, describing this approach as a “balancing policy.” According to him, relations between Armenia and Russia began to change after peace was established between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
A new approach to relations with Russia
The Armenian prime minister said that, previously, about 90% of his country’s interaction with Russia had been based on security issues.
“We have a constructive approach. We want to transform and deepen our relations with the Russian Federation in a constructive manner. We also intend to strengthen our friendship and fraternal ties with the Russian Federation,” Pashinyan said.
The remarks come as Armenia is expanding its international partnerships and seeking to reduce its dependence on Moscow’s traditional security mechanisms.
Cooperation with the European Union on the agenda
Pashinyan also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New York. The sides discussed the agenda for Armenia-European Union cooperation.
In a social media post, von der Leyen said work was under way to bring Armenia closer to the European Union. She noted that roads and bridges were being built through a 200 million euro connectivity package aimed at supporting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.
Pashinyan highlighted the European Union’s support for diversifying Armenia’s economy and its democratic reform programs. Von der Leyen said the European Union would continue supporting initiatives by the Armenian government and expanding cooperation in various areas.
Regional issues were also discussed at the meeting. The talks indicate that Armenia is seeking both to strengthen ties with European institutions and to continue dialogue with Russia.
