A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Sunday after allegedly attempting to carry out a car-ramming attack near the Ganim settlement, according to the Israeli military.
The army did not identify the man. Ganim, east of Jenin, was evacuated under Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan in 2005, but Israel reopened the settlement in August and allowed settlers to return, according to the report.
Other incident reported near Nili
Israel’s public broadcaster earlier reported that a settler was injured in a drive-by shooting near the Nili settlement in the central West Bank.
The incidents came as the Israeli army tightened security measures across the West Bank ahead of the start of the Yom Kippur Jewish holiday on Sunday evening.
Rising tensions in the occupied territory
Palestinians accuse Israel of using the holiday period to intensify attacks in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and to increase incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Israeli forces and settlers have stepped up attacks against Palestinians and their property since the Gaza war began in October 2023. The reported incidents have included killings and arrests, home demolitions and the expansion of settlements that are considered illegal under international law.
