Pakistan said it had carried out air attacks on Afghanistan, targeting hideouts used by armed groups and killing at least 22 fighters, while Kabul accused Islamabad of killing civilians in the strikes.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information announced the operation on Thursday, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. The Afghan government said the attacks hit Kunar in the northeast and Helmand in the south.
Afghanistan’s government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the strikes took place late on Wednesday, killing at least nine people and wounding 11 others. He said three houses were destroyed.
“We condemn this act and consider it an aggression and crime against all accepted principles,” Mujahid wrote in a post on X.
Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the casualty claims.
Pakistan and Afghanistan trade accusations
The reported attacks came amid renewed fighting between the neighbouring countries after three months of relative calm.
Islamabad accuses Kabul of sheltering armed groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which Pakistan says carries out cross-border attacks on its territory.
The Afghan government denies the allegation and says Pakistani attacks have struck civilian homes, killing and wounding women and children.
