Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint, who starred in Hollywood classics including “On the Waterfront” and “North by Northwest”, has died aged 102, Reuters reported.
Saint died on Tuesday of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and loved ones, family representative Jeff Sanderson confirmed.
She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her film debut in Elia Kazan’s 1954 crime drama “On the Waterfront”. She played Edie Doyle, the love interest of Marlon Brando’s conflicted former boxer and dockworker.
In 1959, Saint starred as Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “North by Northwest”. Grant helped shape her character’s look, Saint said, including her hair, makeup, shoes and jewellery.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1924, Saint initially planned to become a teacher before turning to theatre. She trained at the Herbert Berghof Studio and the Actors Studio in New York, which was co-founded by Kazan.
Saint also appeared opposite Paul Newman in Otto Preminger’s “Exodus” in 1960 and played Warren Beatty’s love interest in John Frankenheimer’s “All Fall Down”. She later stepped away from the spotlight to raise a family with director Jeffrey Hayden.
She returned to the big screen in 2006 as Superman’s adoptive mother in “Superman Returns”. Her later film roles included “Winter’s Tale” and the 2019 drama “Mariette in Ecstasy”.
Saint won an Emmy in 1990 for her role as a wealthy widow in the television miniseries “People Like Us”. Until her death, she was the oldest surviving Oscar winner and one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s golden age.
Her marriage to Hayden lasted 65 years, until his death in 2016. She is survived by their two children.
