At least one person has died and five others are missing after an explosion destroyed a three-storey building in Athens’ historic Plaka district, close to the Acropolis, according to Reuters, citing local police.
The blast occurred on a small road between the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The building, reportedly used as a holiday rental, collapsed completely, damaging nearby properties and scattering debris across the road.
Search operation continues
Emergency workers recovered the body of a woman on Saturday morning, while the search for possible survivors continued. Crews have been using excavators and thermal-imaging cameras to examine the rubble.
A gas leak is suspected to have caused the explosion, although authorities have not yet confirmed the cause.
Missing people reportedly failed to board flights
Local media reported that those involved may include four American tourists, one British national and a Greek national. Their identities and the exact number of people inside the building have not been officially confirmed.
The four tourists were reportedly listed as missing after they failed to arrive for their flight at Athens airport. The British Foreign Office has been contacted for comment.
