Felix Tainta, agent of Athletic’s Spanish winger Nico Williams, has shared details of the talks over a proposed move to Barcelona that did not materialize in summer 2025. Athletic were also aware of the negotiations, according to comments shared by FRBarca on social media platform X.
Tainta said the main issue for Williams was receiving assurances that he would have regular playing time at his new club. The parties decided not to take the risk because they could not be certain that potential problems at Barcelona would not affect the winger’s time on the pitch. Tainta stressed that the concern was not solely related to the World Cup: Williams also needed to play as a professional footballer.
According to the agent, the ambitious Williams had considered leaving Athletic. Tainta suggested that he extend his contract with the club, and Williams agreed. The parties then decided on a new deal.
Williams’ contract with Athletic runs until summer 2035. The agreement includes a release clause of about 90 million euros. The Spanish player has made 205 appearances for the club, scoring 38 goals and providing 37 assists.
