A New York Times executive was fatally shot in California, with police arresting his wife’s elderly parents on suspicion of murder.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the newspaper’s director of engineering for games player experience, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin, about 35 miles (56km) west of San Francisco, police said. The New York Times confirmed his death.
Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, face multiple charges, including first-degree murder. It was not immediately clear whether they had legal representation. They are due to appear in court on Wednesday to formally face the charges.
Witnesses describe shooting
McKinsey’s body was found outside the Dublin Sports Grounds at about 15:00 local time on Thursday, according to police. The circumstances were reported by KGO-TV in San Francisco.
Witnesses said they heard a burst of gunfire before seeing McKinsey lying on the ground. “I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody,” witness Assad Razawi told the broadcaster.
Razawi’s daughter said her father saw the suspects “walking together and then casually walk away from the shooting”.
The couple were arrested several minutes later by a police officer passing the scene. A witness said they had remained in the area after the shooting. McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police have not disclosed motive
Authorities have not released a possible motive for the killing.
Zhang and Chen are being held at Santa Rita Jail. In addition to the murder allegations, they face charges of felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and child endangerment.
