A new tunnel will be built on Baku’s Mahammad Khiyabani Street–Outer Ring Road route.
The information was provided to “Operative Information Center-OMM” by the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads.
The agency said the intersection of Mahammad Khiyabani Street and the Outer Ring Road is one of the city’s key points, where urban and transit traffic flows converge. During peak hours, the movement of vehicles through the same intersection causes congestion and delays.
The project calls for a major change to the existing traffic pattern. It will include a tunnel-type overpass, a traffic island with a roundabout, and a side road toward the Garadagh direction.
The project’s main advantage will be preventing traffic flows from different directions from converging at a single point. The new layout will separate traffic flows across different levels, reducing conflicting maneuvers at the junction and organizing entrances and exits more systematically.
The project also provides for the necessary infrastructure to ensure convenient and safe pedestrian movement.
The impact of the new road solution will extend beyond Mahammad Khiyabani Street. Reorganizing traffic at the junction will help distribute the transport load more efficiently toward the 20 January, Shamakhi Highway and Garadagh directions.
The project is one of 24 road projects envisaged under the “State Program on improving transport infrastructure in Baku city and surrounding areas for 2025–2030.”
