South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Friday.
The committee’s statement highlighted Pillay’s career, from defending Nelson Mandela and others who opposed apartheid to serving as a judge in major international court cases in recent times.
This is the fifth Nobel Prize announced this week. Laureates in literature, chemistry, physics and medicine were announced earlier. In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
The prize, worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or about $1.2 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10. The date marks the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prizes were established under his 1895 will.
