Murad Fatiyev will compete for a bronze medal at the world championships in Baku. The Azerbaijani judoka will face Serbia’s Nemanja Majdov. Fatiyev defeated Majdov at the Grand Slam tournament in Ulaanbaatar on June 21, then beat Adam Kopecky to claim bronze.
The 27-year-old Fatiyev will be seeking his first medal at a senior world championship. His achievements include gold at the 2024 Grand Slam in Baku and the 2026 Grand Slam in Tashkent, as well as bronze at the 2025 European Championships.
Majdov became world champion in 2017, won bronze at the 2019 world championships and silver in 2024. The Serbian judoka won the 2019 Grand Slam in Baku. At the 2022 event in the city, he also defeated Mammadali Mehdiyev by ippon in the quarterfinals after 12 minutes and five seconds.
Fatiyev lost to Japan’s Goki Tajima in the semifinals. Tajima also defeated Eljan Hajiyev in the semifinals of last year’s world championships in Budapest; Hajiyev went on to win bronze. In Baku, Tajima will face compatriot Sanshiro Murao in the 90kg final. Azerbaijan’s team has so far won four medals at the tournament: Ahmad Yusifov took gold, Zelim Tskayev silver, and Rashid Mammadaliyev and Omar Rajabli bronze.
