Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has accused Russia of repeatedly violating Moldova’s airspace with drones, calling the incidents unacceptable and warning against allowing them to become routine.
“We must not grow accustomed to it. Repetition does not make violation acceptable,” Tofan said while addressing the United Nations General Assembly during its high-level week, according to the source material.
Moldova’s response to the war in Ukraine
Tofan said Moldova had been unable to choose whether a war would begin next door, referring to its border with Ukraine, but could decide how to respond to the conflict.
“We welcome people fleeing the war. We kept transport routes open. We reduced the cost of rail transit for Ukrainian cargo with grain,” he said, adding that those decisions had not always been cost-free or politically easy domestically.
European Union integration
Moldova received EU candidate status in 2022, and accession negotiations are now under way, the prime minister said.
“Joining the European Union is not about replacing one sphere of influence with another,” Tofan said, referring to Moldova’s past as a Soviet republic. “It is our citizens exercising their right to choose, choose democracy, choose prosperity, choose peace.”
He added that Moldova’s European path was closely linked to its partnership with the United States, particularly in the areas of security, energy independence and resilience.
