Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed trade, defence and energy ties between their countries during a phone call on Wednesday.
Modi described the conversation as “productive” in a post on “X”, the US social media platform. The leaders reviewed cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas, he said.
They also agreed to maintain “close engagement” to advance their comprehensive global strategic partnership, according to Modi.
Russia-related sanctions raise concerns
The call took place days after the United States enacted the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The law allows the US president to impose targeted tariffs of up to 100% on goods imported from countries that purchase the vast majority of Russian oil or gas or help evade sanctions against Russia.
India has raised concerns with Washington over the legislation. Modi said the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including efforts to promote global peace and security.
Trade negotiations continue
The discussion came as India’s trade minister began a visit to the United States for negotiations with American officials.
In February, India and the United States announced that they had agreed on the terms of an interim framework aimed at resolving a bilateral trade dispute. Tensions increased last year after the administration of President Trump imposed tariffs of 50% on Indian goods, partly because India continued buying Russian oil amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
Bilateral trade between India and the United States totalled about $149.4 billion in 2025, according to officials.
