The committee overseeing the Mecca defense pact will meet on Monday, Oct. 5, in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The meeting will address regional developments and efforts to formalize the alliance, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said.
Who will attend the meeting?
Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and Chief of the General Staff Gen. Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu are expected to attend a meeting of the pact’s strategic political and defense committee. Officials from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will also take part.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said the parties would review recent developments in the region and progress made in efforts to formalize the alliance.
Situation in Yemen to be discussed
The latest situation in Yemen is expected to be one of the main topics. On Sunday, Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government, announced the launch of a large-scale military operation aimed at taking control of areas held by the Houthis.
Pakistan’s foreign minister said on Friday that Iran had proposed opening a political dialogue with the Houthis. He said members of the pact’s committee would discuss the proposal at a meeting in Riyadh this week.
The meeting on Monday is expected to review current regional security issues and the next phase of cooperation under the alliance. The pact brings together Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, whose officials use the committee to discuss political and defense coordination.
