Malaysia has condemned “in the strongest terms” the latest mass incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem by more than 1,000 Israeli settlers and senior officials, according to a statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry.
“The deliberate storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque constitutes a grave violation, undermines the established historical and legal status quo of the Holy Site and is a blatant attempt to create a new reality on the ground,” the ministry said.
Malaysia calls for international action
The ministry said repeated incursions by Israeli settlers and senior officials violated international law and the historical and legal status quo governing the mosque.
It described the actions as part of continued attempts by Israel to change the identity and character of Al-Aqsa Mosque and occupied East Jerusalem, rather than isolated provocations.
Malaysia “categorically” rejected such efforts and said the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the religious rights of Muslim worshippers must be fully respected and protected.
Kuala Lumpur called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to take “urgent and concrete” measures to compel Israel to immediately stop what it described as deliberate and serious violations.
Support for Palestinian statehood
Malaysia said Israel must be held accountable for attempts to undermine the historical and legal status quo at Al-Haram Al-Sharif.
The country also reaffirmed its “unwavering” solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. It reiterated its support for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Hundreds of Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Monday under the protection of Israeli police during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
