US President Donald Trump has reportedly reacted sharply to reports concerning the religious situation in Ukraine. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov disclosed these details during a statement made on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum.
According to Lavrov, the religious situation in Ukraine was discussed during one of the meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Putin reportedly briefed Trump on the restrictions and persecution faced by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The Russian Foreign Minister claimed that upon hearing this information, President Trump was initially skeptical but was subsequently "shocked" by the details provided. Lavrov stated that Trump contacted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to verify the facts. Once Rubio confirmed the information, Trump expressed significant surprise regarding the situation.
This development comes amidst ongoing international scrutiny regarding religious freedom in conflict zones. Previously, US Representative Anna Paulina Luna urged Washington not to overlook the pressures applied to religious institutions in Ukraine, highlighting the growing attention within US political circles regarding the protection of religious rights in the region.
